JoAnn Scarborough

JoAnn Scarborough, 90, of Splendora, Texas went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2018. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and grandmother, who loved her family and friends very much.

JoAnn was born on September 26, 1927 in Manchester, Iowa to Fred and Mildred Appleby. Due to cancer and other serious illnesses that her natural born mother had, the doctors suggested that JoAnn be adopted out to a family that could take care of her. She was taken to Annie Whittenmeyer orphanage and was adopted by Lyle C. Roush and Ethel M. Roush at just one month old.

She spent most of her younger years in Iowa and later moved to California and Texas, but her heart was always in Iowa. She knew she was adopted but knew nothing else about her biological family side.

At her father’s passing in 1981 he left a trunk with her birth certificate. She found that her natural born name was Addie Appleby. Her sister-in-law wanted to help and made a call that eventually led her to find her three biological sisters. She learned that they had searched for her for many years that began not long after her adoption but could never get any where. Her natural parents had died several years before. Knowing her story filled her with a sense of peace. They all eventually met and kept in touch for many years. They enjoyed each other and had striking similarities. JoAnn survived all three sisters but they made her heart full.

She always had a smile on her face and loved to sing her silly little songs to her kids and grandkids. She loved her family, music and a good cup of coffee. She will be missed by many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Ethel Roush; husband, Raymond Scarborough; sisters, Helen, Hazel and Minnie; and grandson, John Damon.

Survivors include her sons, Terry McLaren and wife Jaynie, Jimmy Scarborough, Jerry Scarborough and wife Cassandra; daughters, Julie Tucker and husband Charles, Tammy Ratley and husband Gary; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Pace Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Cleveland Memorial Park, Cleveland, Texas.
